Nicky Lopez’s journey from local prodigy to Major League Baseball player is a narrative woven with triumphs, leadership, and a heartfelt commitment to both the sports he played, and the community that shaped him. Lopez’s athletic prowess was evident from the start, as he proudly earned five varsity letters during his time at Naperville Central. His contributions spanned across the realms of baseball and basketball, as he earned three varsity letters for his masterful performances on the baseball diamond, and two for his dynamic contributions on the court.His baseball journey was defined by excellence, marked by consecutive All-DuPage Valley Conference selections in 2012 and 2013. Nicky was at or near the top of every offensive category for the Redhawks, while providing a level of play at shortstop not seen before or since in the storied Naperville Central program. Under the guidance of head coach Mike Stock, as well as assistants Mike Ulreich and Zach Ernst, Lopez lead his teams to a combined 49 - 21 record during his junior and senior seasons. This included a sectional title for the Redhawks in 2012. According to Stock, “Nicky has always been about winning. No moment was too big and no level of play was out of his reach. He answered every challenge like a Big Leaguer and raised the level of his teammates' play.”On the basketball court, Lopez showcased his versatility, earning two varsity letters and leaving an indelible mark on the Redhawk basketball legacy, all under the watchful eye of coach Pete Kramer. “Nicky was the kind of athlete that was great in the clutch. He loved the pressure,” Kramer recalled. In fact, it was the most pressure-packed moments where Lopez seemed to shine the most, wrapping up three wins his senior year with buzzer-beaters, including a basket to beat a highly ranked Benet squad in the Hoops for Healing Championship game. Lopez also earned the Red White Award during his senior year for basketball, an accolade that not only acknowledged his athletic achievements, but also celebrated his leadership and positive influence within the Naperville Central community.Nicky Lopez’s commitment to Naperville Central extended beyond the sports he played. An ardent supporter, he reveled in the achievements of his fellow Redhawks, a testament to his love for the school and all things Redhawk. One of Nicky's cherished memories was winning the J. Kyle Braid Leadership Award, a testament to his commitment to leadership and community service. Under the mentorship of coach Barry Baldwin, this group focused on honing leadership skills and giving back to the community, instilling values that would shape Nicky's character both on and off the field. Coach Baldwin shared that “Nicky has a kindness for others that always put those around him before himself. His smile would light up a room and made everyone feel accepted. Nicky made everyone feel special.” Notably, Nicky's compassion extended to working with Pat Adamatis’ Adaptive PE class. Reflecting on the experience, Lopez shares, "Being able to impact those that are in need or look up to us was a blessing." This sentiment captures the essence of Nicky Lopez—the athlete with a heart, who understood the power of using sports as a means to uplift others.Following his high school career, Lopez continued to excel at the collegiate level, earning a scholarship to play baseball at Creighton University, where he played three years for Coach Ed Servais and the Bluejays; he was named to the Big East All-Tournament Team in 2015, and 2nd Team All-Big East in 2016. Drafted by the Kansas City Royals in the 5th round of the 2016 Major League Baseball draft, Nicky Lopez began a professional baseball career that would include many stops: from 2016 through May of 2019 Nicky would play for the Burlington (NC) Royals, Wilmington (DE) Blue Rocks, Northwest Arkansas (Springdale, AR) Naturals before landing back in Omaha (NE) with the AAA Storm Chasers. At each level Lopez, set himself apart with his work ethic and production. Finally, the call every ball player dreams of came on May 14, 2019. Nicky Lopez was called up to the Kansas City Royals. His remarkable journey from Naperville Central to the grand stage of Major League Baseball is a testament to his unwavering work ethic and the solid foundation, built during his formative years in Naperville. While with the Royals, Lopez was a 2020 Gold Glove Finalist, becoming the only Kansas City Royals shortstop to ever complete the season with a .300 batting average. Lopez was traded by the Royals to the Atlanta Braves during the 2023 season and was part of the Braves 2023 National League Eastern Division Championship team. To the delight of all his hometown fans, Nicky Lopez was then traded by the Braves to the Chicago White Sox for the 2024 season. Behind every step in this long journey stood a strong support system—his family and friends, who have been with him throughout his entire career. Nicky's love for them is immeasurable, and he acknowledges the pivotal role they played in his success. Now, with a new chapter as a married man, he continues to rely on the unwavering support of his new wife, Sydney.Nicky Lopez stands not only as a testament to athletic excellence but as an example of leadership, sportsmanship, and community spirit.
